AKAGI SHIGERU (赤木 しげる)
voiced by Hagiwara Masato (萩原 聖人)
1958. It was a dark and stormy night…
Akagi was soaked, and the rain didn’t help. The race had been exciting while it lasted, but it had ended far too soon. The gang had been weak, his opponent had been weak, and everything had been so much less than he’d wanted. They hadn’t taken him seriously. Maybe it was because they couldn’t look past his age. Maybe they were just stupid.
Akagi took hold of the doorknob. Everything could change tonight, if his little gamble paid off. Yakuza were dangerous people, or so he’d heard. Perhaps they had that “something” he was looking for. That “something”, that unidentifiable sensation he got that tasted like blood in his mouth. That made him feel, for the briefest of moments, alive.
If not, then he’d search elsewhere.
Well, either way, it would be good to get out of the rain for a little while.
He pushed the door open…

At the tender age of thirteen, Akagi was already a little hellraiser and a cold-blooded bastard with no equal. With about five minutes’ worth of information and rules from Nangou, he went from a complete novice in Mahjong to an average player. Then he went from average to impossibly, unnaturally good. He came, he saw, he beat the crap out of everyone. Akagi was demonic. Akagi was… godly.
The boy had big balls of steel, and they would grow bigger as he got older.
Akagi is a pretty straightforward character when you get right down to it. He wants his thrills, and he wants them now. He can’t stop, he can’t back down, and he shows no mercy. Cold and ruthless, Akagi mows through his opponents with an insane glint in his eyes. He willingly, perhaps even eagerly, bets as much as he can with every gamble. There’s a need in him see how far he can go, especially if it can potentially end in his death. It seems to be a roundabout way of committing suicide. Akagi certainly doesn’t seem particularly interested in living. Still, he never throws the game and, despite all odds, he never loses. Does he have unnatural powers? Do the heavens bless him with unending victory, yet curse him with a burning desire for challenge that can never be satisfied? Is he just freakishly talented? Who knows.

NANGOU (南郷)
voiced by Koyama Rikiya (小山 力也)
He’d wanted to build a new life for himself, thinking that gambling would help fund the expenses. Unfortunately, he was no match for the yakuza. He owed them a large amount of money and, if he lost the evening’s Mahjong game, they would kill him for his debts. All seemed lost until a thirteen-year-old kid showed up at the door…

That’s all there is to Nangou, really. He’s an ordinary man who owes some bad people a lot of money. He gets dragged along in Akagi’s wake and does little more than sit there gawking. He sucks at Mahjong. You can’t blame him. He’s only human.

YASUOKA (安岡)
voiced by Genda Tesshô (玄田 哲章)
The lieutenant had just come in from the rain, following a lead. Two cars had hurtled off a cliff and crashed into the ocean. A game of chicken. One boy was hospitalized and in critical condition, but the other had swum to shore. And there were wet footprints on the steps.
Yasuoka looked around the room and at the gathering of yakuza before his gaze fell upon the young boy playing Mahjong. The boy hadn’t been flustered when he’d questioned him, and an alibi fell readily from his lips. Just relaxing, playing Mahjong. Still, this “Akagi” was a suspicious character, sharp and cunning, and as the night wore on, Yasuoka started to see him in a new light: the light of monetary possibility…

There’s no doubt about it: Yasuoka is a dirty cop. He plays nice with yakuza and is friends with at least one boss. He’s good at setting things up and acts as an underworld middleman. The man seems to enjoy playing manager, if only for the money it rakes in. He’s no slouch at Mahjong, either, and even though he can’t play at Akagi’s level (frankly, no one can), he can generally understand what he did after the fact.

RYUUZAKI (竜崎)
voiced by Nakata Kouji (中田 浩二)
Nangou was dead; he just didn’t know it yet. Yes, the boy had guts, he’d give him that. He was a chicken survivor, after all, and Ryuuzaki respected his sheer audacity. “His brother’s kid”, eh? It didn’t matter either way. If Nangou wanted that kid to take his place for a few rounds, it wasn’t a problem. It’s not like the boy knew how to play.

Ryuuzaki is one of the yakuza that Nangou owes money to. He’s much better at Mahjong than Nangou and starts out winning when he battles Akagi. Unfortunately, his winning streak comes to an abrupt end once demon spawn Akagi starts getting the hang of it.
