Here are some miscellaneous tidbits that you may or may not find interesting…

Some of the extra characters with speaking parts in the Akagi anime have funny names. For example, among Ryuuzaki’s men…

The big dude with the red glasses is “Maru Megane” (Round Glasses). The guy with the sunglasses is called “Gura-san” (probably short for Sun”Gura”ss-san. In other words, Mister Sunglasses). They really appear in the credits like that: Maru Megane and Gura-san.

The kanji for “Yukio” (幸雄) means “happy/lucky guy”. Ironic, considering what happens to a certain Hirayama Yukio. He’s one of the most unlucky guys in the series.

Morikawa, the VA for Suzuki from the Washizu arc, is actually rather well-known. He was also the voice of Sephiroth in Final Fantasy: Advent Children. Consider him a sort of guest star.

Many of Akagi‘s VAs enjoy Mahjong, and Hagiwara Masato has won several awards in Mahjong competitions. He describes his life as ‘the way of Mahjong’ in an interview in Nitele Jannick (the weird bit at the end of the Akagi episodes with the three girls in it).

At the end of every Akagi episode, there are three live PR girls in Chinese-style dresses (representing the Haku, Hatsu, and Chun Dragon tiles) promoting Akagi merchandise. They have this awkward group pose where they stand on one foot and stick their arms out to the side. Hard to do in high heels. When they’re not selling, they’re interviewing the staff or being silly.

Anyway, the stuff that’s currently out:

ZawaZawa T-Shirt
ZawaZawa Teacup
Akagi Ash Tray
Akagi Zippo Lighter

In the first DVD box, there is a match between three VAs (Akagi, Yasuoka, and Urabe) and Fukumoto (the author of the original manga). In the second DVD box, it’s a ‘Washizu Mahjong’ match between Akagi and Washizu’s VAs.

There are two live-action Akagi movies out from V-cinema. They were made around 1997 and re-released in DVD form after the anime became popular. They’re low-budget movies intended for video release.
